Here we have intercontinental folk songsmithery from the Mu school of ragged improvisation. The tracks were recorded live in Stockholm, where Dyani was living in exile at the time. It’s no surprise to see fellow South African ex-pat and Brotherhood of Breath cohort Mongezi Feza on this set, but the wild card is Okay Temiz. The Turkish drummer performed alongside Dyani with Don Cherry for a year, at the end of the Sixties. He made his bones with Turkish Folk Jazz in 1974 on Sonet, and later gained (somewhat) greater recognition with his Oriental Wind ensemble later in the decade.
The order of the day here isn’t polite world-jazz fusion or a straightforward variation on joyful South African kwela. Instead, the trio serve up bold improvisations that sing of displacement, knotty songs that circle around themselves, melodies that traffic in bruised beauty. On “Traditional South African Songs,” the main threads are Temiz’ bashing - he’s unusually high in the mix; Steve Albini would approve – and Dyani’s impassioned singing and blocky piano stylings. Feza takes center stage for the lighter and more grooving “Gorans Soder,” unfurling a series of elliptically biting solos.
There is joy in these tracks as well as a single-mindedness that suggests a certain desperation. Like any good joke, it mixes humor and pathos in a way that makes both come through.
